Causes Analysis on Edge Cracks of Hot-rolled H-beam

Edge cracks defect was found for a batch of hot-rolled H-beam which was produced by a medium section steel production line of a steel plant during production, and the causes of edge cracks were analyzed by macroscopic examination, chemical compositions analysis and metallographic examination and so on. The results show that internal cracks of the continuous casting billet and high inclusion contents were main causes for the edge cracks. Finally improvement measures were proposed according to the defect causes, and the edge cracks situation of the H-beam were controlled effectively.
