Reasons for cracking of SPCC steel drums in automotive transportation environment

    • A SPCC steel drum experienced a cracking accident during transportation by car. The reasons for the cracking of steel drums were analyzed using macroscopic observation, mechanical property testing, chemical composition analysis, scanning electron microscopy analysis, metallographic examination, and finite element analysis, and optimization solutions were proposed. The results show that the steel drum experienced fatigue cracking due to bumps and parallel sliding during transportation. Adding rubber shock pads at the bottom of SPCC steel drums without increasing their thickness could effectively improve their fatigue resistance.
