Preparation Methods of Metallographic Samples of Different Types of Titanium and Titanium Alloys

Abstract
The preparation methods of metallographic samples of different types of titanium and titanium alloys were studied, and the process parameters of cutting, grinding, polishing and etching of different types of titanium and titanium alloys metallographic samples were determined. The results show that the metallographic samples of titanium and titanium alloys could cutted with ultra-thin diamond cutting sheet or 180 mesh grinding wheel cutting sheet, the cutting speed was 150~250 r·min-1 and the feed rate was 0. 5 mm·min-1. For different types of titanium alloys, applying the three-step process of "one grinding and two polishing", "two grinding and one polishing" or the four-step process of "two grinding and two polishing", and then applying the etching agent composed of hydrofluoric acid, nitric acid and distilled water with different volume ratios determined by repeated tests, the high-quality metallographic samples that meet the inspection requirements could be obtained, which greatly improved the metallographic sample preparation efficiency of titanium and titanium alloys.
