A Preliminary Method for Calculating Brinell Hardness Value Based on the Depth of Indentation

    • It is pointed out that two different length amounts of ‘depth of indentation’ and ‘displacement of the bar with indenter’ were not discriminated in a lot of standards and classics on hardness test method. Deeming the displacement of the bar with indenter as the depth of indentation, will not cause mistake results for Rockwell hardness test. However, deeming the displacement of the bar with indenter as the depth of indentation to calculate diameter of indentation and Brinell hardness value, will cause a remarkable mistake. The method to calculate the diameter of indentation and Brinell hardness value with the displacement of the bar subtracted the elastic deformation of the equipment was proposed. The test results show that the Brinell hardness test results by the new method are conformance with the results by measuring the diameter of indentation with a optical measurement system. The method has the advantages of the Brinell hardness test and the fast Brinell hardness test, and can obtain the Brinell hardness test results quickly and accurately.
