Abstract: Dynamic seal element used for water pump made by 40Cr steel treated through ion nitriding process distorted and broke in use. The element was analyzed by means of metallographic examination and microhardness measurement. The result showed that the microhardness was too low and the nitrided layer was too shallow after nitriding process. Some suggestion was presented to increase the life of the element.
